Tables and Chairs

The thinking behind  my tables and chairs is very much the same as my benches; they grow out of a functional need.  Their form  will eventually allow for function but this is not the road they follow easily.  They generally follow design ideas and will have an eye towards function, but they do not subordinate easily.  In fact, some never make it at all and will find their way into some other calling or series of mine.

Sculptures by Craig

Beginning October 1, 2023

Recently, I was invited to contribute to Water Street Market with a sculpture walk of my work. This is my first design collaboration with the visionary developer of Water Street Market.  Unlike the sterile environments of a Gallery or Museum, we both thought that integrating art into this popular community space would add value by providing a unique visual experience among its exclusive boutiques and eateries.

The placement of each of my sculptures has been thoughtfully chosen to compliment its surroundings. Inherently, the sculptures stand as silent sentinels that add some mystery, drama, and even a sense of fun. They can change how we experience and think about a space.

I have come to employ a diversity of materials and techniques that has challenged even my own perceptions of what exactly I can call art.

In my stone and steel series, some of my larger pieces are purely fabricated forms. The process to create them is slow, quite demanding and often first born through drawings. I often like to incorporate unusual stone elements to enhance the design. This type of sculpture tends to be more totemic and arresting in their orientation. (See numbers)

In my assemblages series, I enjoy bringing new life to metal that has been discarded. I often use discovered fabricated objects that I feel have some intuitive connection. I investigate their scars and strive to make them a little more organic by intuitively joining these elements to create larger, more spontaneous pieces.  I sometimes cut, forge, and fabricate these elements in ways that often temporally disguise their origin.  Ultimately they are employed to create tension, balance, compromise and even one object's domination over another. This series pays tribute to our Industrial Revolution that altered our culture forever.

I have also been experimenting with the use of subtle colors in some of my pieces. My motive here is to further enhance and heighten the playfulness of a particular piece. See ()

While I have contributed the most to this exhibit, you will find a few other artist’s work along the way. I've incorporated some of my sculptural benches to encourage you to take a moment, to stop and enjoy all the art and the wonderful artistic surroundings of Waterstreet Market.
